The Descent Pastel The small emerging image mustThis work is layered, on to a raw canvas. I placed reeds from the saltmarsh and bonded them together with a layer of Japanese paper. I was then able to allow some time for the layers to dry before adding a coat of pastel ground. This allow the pastels to adhere to a surface that might otherwise be to fine to hold the pigments. The shapes of the reeds and the ridges under the paper grabbed at the pastels as I drew. By this I mean, the soft pastels were
